Architect for Pandangan Villas

Laurence Loh's impressive reputation as one of Malaysia's leading architects has been affirmed by numerous excellence awards both in Malaysia and Internationally. A member of the Royal Institute of British Architects (RIBA), Laurence Loh has also served as Chairman for the Malaysian Architects Association and is the Vice Chairman of the Malaysian Heritage Trust, a testimony to his years of experience in the field of conservation. The firm is best known for projects of distinctiveness and quality of design in architecture, interiors and landscaping and in conservation authenticity.

Laurence Loh has approached Pandangan Villas with a clear vision to create a very private luxury development which will compliment the natural features of the land and be an example of 'best practice' for an island which still retains its cultural integrity and has seen very little tourist development of this type.

Building Relationships with the Sea

Langkawi is surrounded by water and villages built upon the water. Even the roads circumvent the island and water is everywhere to be seen in and around this island. There exists a relationship between water and life in Langkawi.

In Pandangan Villas we reverse the order. Each villa is built around a private pool such that living, dining, bedrooms, lanai and garden, surrounds the pool. At the heart of each villa is water. When each villa is placed on the site, side by side, the water element (pool) of each villa forms an uninterrupted axis or vista to the sea. There exists a relationship between water and life in Pandangan Villas.

The garden of each villa is terraced towards the sea. This enhances its relationship to the sea at a more personal level for each villa. In addition, privacy is enhanced for each villa. One is reminded of the famous terraced padi fields facing the sea that can be found in this region. There exists a personal relationship between each villa and the sea. Laurence Loh. Architect.

Traditional Architecture - Malay
Traditional Malay architecture employs relatively sophisticated architectural processes ideally suited to tropical conditions such as wide roof overhangs and high-pitched roofs. Building on stilts allows cross-ventilating breezes beneath the dwelling to cool the house.
Traditional houses in Negeri Sembilan were built entirely free of nails. Built of hardwood, they are constructed using a post and beam construction held together by wedges. A beautiful example of this type of architecture can be seen in the Old Palace of Sri Menanti in Negeri Sembilan, which was build around 1905.
Another truly magnificent example of Malay architectural creativity is the Istana Kenangan in the royal town of Kuala Kangsar. Built in 1926, it is the only Malay palace with bamboo walls.
Today, many Malay or Islamic buildings incorporate Moorish elements as part of their design as can be seen in the Islamic Arts Museum; a number of buildings in Putrajaya - the new administrative capital, and many mosques throughout the country.
